The GoSport Story – From a Small Paddlesports Start-Up to a Thriving Adventure Network

When Alex Merrifield and Nathan Cole launched Prime Paddling in 2021, the vision was clear — to make outdoor adventure accessible, exciting, and educational for children and families across Hampshire. What began with a handful of kayaks and a shared dream on Gosport’s waterfront has grown into a multi-site, Ofsted-registered childcare and outdoor activity organisation trusted by thousands of families.

Drawing on their combined experience in education, youth leadership, and outdoor instruction, Alex and Nathan saw the need for something different — a childcare provider that put adventure, learning, and personal growth at its core. Parents didn’t just want a place for their children to stay; they wanted a place for them to grow.

From those early sessions on the water, where every paddle stroke counted, to long evenings repairing kit and planning future sessions, Alex and Nathan built GoSport around three principles: safety, inclusivity, and adventure. Their motto, “Do More, Be More,” became the heartbeat of the organisation — a promise that every child would leave camp with new confidence and lasting memories.

As GoSport grew, the founders’ roles evolved. Alex now leads on strategy, innovation, and business development — driving forward GoSport’s growth plans and ensuring compliance across Ofsted, AALA, and Paddle UK. Nathan oversees operations, corporate groups, and catering, whilst mentoring the team of instructors who share their passion for helping everyone thrive outdoors.

Today, GoSport Activity Centre operates from its flagship site in Gosport, with new adventure childcare locations at The Gregg School in Southampton and Bedales School in Petersfield. Each site reflects GoSport’s mission to combine outdoor learning with genuine care — giving every child the chance to discover, play, and build lifelong skills.

From a seasonal start-up to a year-round network of sites, GoSport’s journey is one of teamwork, resilience, and purpose. What started as two friends with an idea is now a growing community inspiring the next generation to embrace the outdoors — proving that with passion, partnership, and perseverance, small beginnings can lead to something extraordinary.
